New Coffs Harbour digital start-up Magic Cupboard Interactive are excited to be awarded a NSW Liveable Communities grant for their project Spark*Connection.

Local entrepreneurs Mark George and Peter Van Schellebeck met today with the Honourable John Ajaka MLC Minister for Ageing, Minister for Disability Services and Minister for Multiculturalism, Member of the Legislative Council, and Andrew Fraser NSW Member for Cowper, to discuss their project.

Magic Cupboard Interactive is a new joint venture between Mark George from Design Wave Pty Ltd and Peter Van Schellebeck from Pixelkrunch Pty Ltd.

Mark and Peter have worked together for 15 years, developing exhibition interactives (touch screens and computer games) for the Powerhouse Museum and creating large-scale digital promotional products (DVDs, CD-Roms) for International clients including Foxtel and Coca Cola.

“The spark for our project came from our involvement with the local 6 Degrees Co-Working Hub run by Coffs Harbour City Council” said Mark George.

“We are utilising lean start-up methodologies to create our Spark*Connection prototype” said Peter Van Schellebeck.

Spark*Connection is a project that will keep recent retirees aged 55+ mentally active and socially engaged using innovative digital technologies.

Spark*Connection will create change for this target group by providing a regular social activity, that utilises their professional expertise and knowledge to help small and micro-businesses in regional areas.

Spark*Connection addresses the issue that change from full-time employment to retirement can lead to a loss of wealth, lifestyle, self-image and purpose and cause a serious decline in mental health and wellbeing.

Joining the Spark*Connection team is Erika Van Schellebeck, a Community Engagement Facilitator and program logic and evaluation expert. Providing executive guidance on the project is Dr Jan Strom, a member of Regional Development Australia – Mid North Coast Board (2009-15).
